My husband and I were in Columbus this past week taking some vacation time. For those of you who are wondering what did you go to Columbus? I have 3 responses; NHL Entry Draft; Longaberger and The Ohio Valley AG.
At IHRIM Conference, I mentioned to Todd Balzer that I would be in Columbus and offered to speak or meet with his Board. They had been planning an event, and finalized the date to coincide with my trip.
I did not know what to expect, and the event exceeded my expectations.
Not only was I welcomed, I was educated as well. Rich Fletcher talked about the HR Technology marketplace today and presented a handout that has tremendous value as I evaluate what we want to do with our HR Systems. What was particularly eye opening was the pace at which companies are merging and the explosion of "Talent Management" vendors in the marketplace.
The interaction with the other participants and Rick's willingness to take questions helped to dive deeper into those area's the group was interested in.
What was more impressive, was once again the information sharing among the attendees. Most of the attendees were currently looking at what to do with their current systems. Each persons company had a different business reason for looking or replacing, although I would have to say the majority in attendance were unanimous that their existing ERP was not providing the functionality that they needed in HR. I always learn from others, and this was no exception.
Steve E. from Findley Davis spoke about vendor demonstration scripts, how to successfully create them and get the most from a vendor demonstration. During this segment, there was great feedback from 2 attendees who were with ADP. They brought the vendor perspective on the topic which provided insight we would not have gotten without them in attendance.
There were a few trivia questions thrown out to the audience from Rick. I am now going to offer them to you and the first person to respond with the correct answer, will receive a prize from me. Sorry, Rick and those who were at this presentation are not eligible for the prize.
Question #1 - Who are the 3 major players in the LMS space today?
Question #2 - Who were the major 7 players in the HRMS market 30 years ago?
Good Luck!

I'll take a shot at the LMS question (in no particular order):
Plateau
Cornerstone
Saba
If I get this right, I'll have to thank Freddye Silverman for her "Caveat Emptor" presentation that she gave at Conference, because that's where I found a list of the more prominent players in the LMS world.
I can't say that I remember anything from 30 years ago as I was a mere 3 years old, but I would bet that they weren't called HRIS Systems, but rather Payroll Systems or Personnel Systems. ;)
Steve Secora
So did Steve Secora get the LMS question correct?
And what were all the old systems called?
OK - I'll take a shot at #2 although I was very young (cough) too.
MSA
McCormick & Dodge
Cyborg
Compuserv
Dunn & Bradstreet
Unisys HR/Payroll
One Apple System that I cannot remember the name of...
