This past week I have encountered a few things that just don't make sense to me and in the process will drive me crazy. See if you can relate:
In the past few days we have been having discussions about our Recruiting application. There have been numerous complaints from Store Managers and Field Recruiters about how the application just does not work. Countless hours have been spent to understand the issues they encounter to better understand if it is a system issue or a process issue. Yesterday, I finally discovered that it is a process issue and that what we require our Store Managers and Field Recruiters to do is too cumbersome and has too many steps. I also discovered that the people who put the process in place are unwilling to change the process, but would like a new system as they feel that with a different system the process would be better. Yup! The old throw technology at a process issue.
In another part of my work world, we are moving from supplying technical resources from a shared service function to allowing these resources in the application development groups. The decision to do this was made almost a month ago so that application owners have more flexibility in sourcing their projects. The actual move has not yet taken place, because the former shared service area has not yet defined a process for transitioning this. They are still going to own the standards and have not yet created a flexible process for monitoring the standards. Ah Yes, the team that could not create a process flexible enough to support the application area is expected to put together a flexible process for monitoring standards.... Odds of this happening in my tenure ???
In yet another part of my work world I have a business partner who wants to look for an application to support a business directive but does not have requirements nor does he have any process designed. He wants to look at a few systems and when he sees one he likes, he'll be able to tell me what he wants! Yup... a classic and nothing we all haven't faced before, but it truly drives me crazy!
Lastly on the home front, my husband refuses to turn the air conditioner on yet. We go through this every year. He claims it is because it gets cool enough in the evening to cool the house down and wants to save on energy. Than when the house gets to a point where it is too hot he turns it on and can't understand why the air conditioner has to work so hard to cool the house down!
What has happened lately that drives you crazy?

What drives me crazy is closely related to some of Jacqueline's comments. I get so upset when I go into a client location and discover that although they carefully defined all of their requirements for a new system, they failed to make the vendor demonstrate each and every requirement in the system. The client inevitably turns to me and asks if we can "make the system do it" -- which of course is impossible or will require significant customizations, for which they do not want to pay.
When looking at a new system, make your potential vendor demonstrate each and every requirement -- or ask for access to a sandbox environment where you can test it yourself.
