HR Technology 2008 Resolutions

It is that time of year when we determine our resolutions for the new year. Personal resolutions are set with the intention that we will become a better person because of them. Even though we rarely keep them longer than a few weeks/months, at least we tired right?

In the spirit of making resolutions for the purpose of improvement, I propose the following resolutions to improve the HRIS/HRIT departments in 2008.

#1) In 2008, I resolve to give IT the most notice possible for work requests. I will try and understand their position with respect to resources and prioritization of work. I will stop complaining about their inability to get work done and do more to understand how together we can accomplish more.

#2) In 2008 I resolve to be more understanding of the system needs of HR. I will work with them to understand what their requirements are and be patient with them as we work though their requirements. I will explain to them the technology solutions using business language and not technical terms. I will be proactive and meet with them regularly to understand what might be coming up so that I can better prepare to provide them services.

#3) I Resolve to never move new code/configuration into production with defects. We will adopt the appropriate testing scenarios to produce defect free applications. We will allow enough time in our project plans to test these scenarios fully and leave enough time to address defects when they occur. (also related to resolution #6)

#4) I Resolve to never customize another piece of commercial off the shelf software. I will not purchase software that does not meet our needs, or add customizations to software already purchased.

#5) I Resolve to never develop or configure without a clear understanding of the business requirement and/or a functional specification. If I don't know what the end product is supposed to do and the process it is to support, I will not start the development work.

#6) I Resolve to never implement something that is not quite finished just because the due date is here. I will have clear requirements, a solid project plan and follow proper status reporting so that the status of work is always known and that when a delay occurs a reasonable method of determining a new due date is applied.

What resolutions do you suggest for 2008?

Have a Happy and Productive 2008!
